Review: Colors of My Heart, Sharon Burch

Colors of My Heart, is a unique blend of  contemporary folk, acoustic styling with rich Diné musical heritage, in a signature Sharon Burch style.

As well as a rich tapestry of  musical instruments such as violin, cello, drums, rattles, synth guitar and flute, Sharon accompanies her vocals playing the acoustic guitar.  Burch sings in both English and her native tongue, her voice warm and sweet, colorful with a motherly-like, earthly and feminine quality.  Inspired by songs sung by her mother and grandfather, Colors of My Heart celebrates family, Mother Earth and a connection to all living things.

Sharon was born of a Navajo mother and a German father.  She was raised in the traditional Navajo culture in New Mexico and spoke only Navajo until she began school.  Her music has become well-known, as it truly captures the traditional Navajo ways and shares an intimate glimpse into the traditions of the Diné.  Colors of My Heart Lyrics

Tádídíín bik’eh atiingóó, bee naashá,
Tádídíín bik’eh atiingóó, bee naashá, bee naashá.
(The trail of the sacred corn pollen, I walk the good life.)

I want to draw the world the way that I feel,
With corn pollen sprinkles and the colors of my heart,
The orange feeling of daybreak,
The warm red feeling of the sun,
The cool blue mist of the ocean and the big blue sky,
The black of the night when day is done.

Yes, I’d want to draw the world the way that I feel,
With corn pollen sprinkles and the colors of my heart,
The taste of brown comes from our Mother Earth,
The green smells of the plants and trees,
The yellow haze of the afternoon light
Which reminds me, too, of the yellow moonlight.

Yes, I’d want to draw the world the way that I feel,
With corn pollen sprinkles and the colors of my heart,

The purple touch of the stormy rain showers
And the pure white air that I breathe and live by.
Yes, I’d want to draw the world the way that I feel,
With corn pollen sprinkles and the colors of my heart.
