Review: Mermade Magickal Arts

“Let Earth be our Church, for all the land is sacred ” - Katlyn

"Incense ... When a visitor enters your home, Let sweet fragrance greet them. It carries a meaning, “You are honored here...." Incense is a blessing of the air, An offering.... For the visitor might be a god in disguise.... "- Katlyn

Nature has so much to share with us all. The earth is a mystical teacher, a loving mother and provider of many gifts, including many aromatic ingredients burned alone or in combination as incense. Incense is said to carry your prayers up to the heavens, especially among the saints and has historical reference in every culture including the bible, where it was burned by many. The language of scent is rich, holding many keys, unlocking many doors.

The earth is a magickal and profound place, where mystery abounds and life is a miracle in motion. I have been looking forward to experiencing Mermade Magickal Arts incense and perfumes ever since I started listing to Zingaia. There is nothing that compares to the burning of a good incense, as it is mind altering, sacred, divine and heart opening. Scent undoubtedly has great power,. It is capable of healing, enhancing dreams, arousal in all forms including sexual, stirring the emotions, triggering memories, raising energy, cleaning and purifying, increase psychic powers, meditation, ritual, attraction, repulsion, peace, war ... you get the idea.

Mermade Magickal Arts & Katlyn Breene

Mermade Magickal Arts, born in 1984, is a natural incense and artisan perfume shop, the residence of the well-loved and extremely talented, creator and owner Katlyn Breene. Most of the incense is created and packaged by hand in Katlyn's workshop, with a few choice, rare exceptions that Mermade finds important to share with us all. An inspiration, Katlyn is a woman of many talents. A musician, artist, poet, mystic, high priestess and artisan of fine incense blends and perfume artist, Katlyn blends all her gifts, spinning a a web of mystery and intrigue into all she does. She has created the cover art for several albums, as well as her own and written and illustrated several books on spiritual arts and folklore. Her unique blends of incense can only be found at Mermade Magickal Arts. Mermade Magical Arts also houses Zingaia, the musical project of Katlyn and her husband Micheal, and Katlyn's artwork collectively known as "Altar Images".

The Art Of Incense

People have been gathering, combining and burning fragrant woods, resins, oils, herbs, berries, spices and flowers for centuries. Incense has played an important role in the spiritual lives of many, if not all ancient cultures through-out history and continues to do so today. The fragrant gifts from nature are our allies. Great care, as with a friend or loved-one, should be taken in order to help release the full fragrance, the full potential of the incense. To learn more about the Art of Incense, visit Mermaid Magickal Arts. The website is filled with interesting articles about incense and proper technique. There is more to know then you probably think.

My Experience

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Mermade. I am a huge Zingaia fan and to me this incense is special, making me feel a little closer to Katlyn. It is quite easy to see that she has been making incense and perfume for thirty years now. The products are exceptional, beautifully packaged, clean smelling and pure. As to be expected, I had a different experience with each and I do indeed have favorites that I will be placing an order for soon. My husband was also involved in this experiment, a review I can safely say has been one of the "funnest" yet.

I find it relevant to this review to mention that some of these products I did not like at first, yet after experiencing them a few times, I grew to absolutely love them. This is especially true with the "In Sense" Balm and the Aphrodisia oil, which I learned is a natural enhancement to one's own scent, a special kind of incense alchemy. I love how Katlyn describes her body oils and balms - as living incense on the skin, created with art and made with love, uniquely beautiful to each one who wears them. They contain absolutely no synthetic fragrance, so if you are sensitive to synthetic perfumes, this is definitely where you want to shop for an all-natural scent to wear.

All the incense burns clean and pure. It only took burning a little bit to make my room smell great, and lasted a few hours before the aroma began to wane. Synthetic materials in commercially-produced incense can often cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. My husband is one of those sensitive individuals and he did not experience any kind of breathing difficulties while burning any of the incense. That is such great news because I certainly could burn incense on a daily basis.

The one down side to Mermade's products are that some of them are limited and it is easy to get addicted. A little pricey for some, although completely worth it and certainly reasonable. I would love to see a few more sample packs available. This would be a great way to get a taste of all the products, something I plan to eventual do. Sample packs also make great gifts.

The following is a list of the Mermade products that I sampled and my thoughts on each.

Oman Frankincense, Boswellia Sacra, $6.95, 2.5 (really more like 3 oz.) ounces. This is a great price for high-quality Frankincense and although it is one of the cheaper varieties that Mermade has to offer, it certainly is up there in the high-end department. It is direct from the harvest and may contain bits and pieces of the tree in came from. That is why it is offered at such a low price. I have purchased several packs of these as gifts for Christmas.

Body Incense, "In Sense" Balm, $20.00. If I had to choose a favorite of the bunch it would be this body balm, suitable for man or woman. This sweet, erotic, mysterious, sensuous balm is unlike anything I have ever had before. Inspired by Kyphi, you get a different taste of the sacred Egyptian blend. It melts right into the skin, like glaze on a deliscious, delicate dessert, blending with my own chemistry and creating a unique scent that is mine alone.

Aphrodesia Incense, $16.00, 12 pieces in jar. Sexy, erotic, strong, romantic, sweet, flowery and female, this incense is great, my favorite incense that I tried. It does not require charcoal, you simply light it and let it do its magic. This incense "gets noticed", creating an aromatic environment that is inviting and warm.

Body incense, Aphrodesia Oil - 2012, $25.00, 3 ml bottle. This deeply fragrant, sensual, essential oil perfume was inspired by the Greek Goddess of Love. I did not care for this oil at first. It is quite strong when you smell it on its own, but when you apply it something magical happens - it transforms into a spicy, seductive and sweet pleasure. I cannot stop smelling my wrist when I apply it - yum. My husband loves it on me too - yay, that scores this oil a great big, juicy ten!

Kyphi 2012, $18.00, 1/2 ounce. More subtle, sweet and elegant, these small cakes of incense are quite addictive, one of the premium incense creations that Mermade offers. Kyphi is an ancient blend, burned by the Egyptians and is quite magical. It is definitely better burned slowly. If you burn it too fast, you will not truly be able to enjoy it. It takes a long time to make, at least seven months, and is made with botanicals, spices and resins. I strongly recommend this incense. It is treasure and fun to burn when reviewing the history behind it. It is also great for ritual and daily devotion.

Earth Church Incense, $6.00, Six large wands/This is one of the few incense blends that Katlyn does not make directly, although she did help create it, with a blessing and intention of a scented prayer for peace. The ingredients were selected for their energy and traditional use for spiritual work, each from a different part of the World. The combination of these diverse botanicals creates a harmonic blend of fragrant delight. An analogy of world peace, Earth Church is a prayer and example of how diversity can unite in beauty and harmony. Earth Church is a joy to burn, and honestly an honor to contribute my energy toward. What an absolutely great idea, not to mention it smells great and burns well. You do not even need charcoal, just light it up and connect to your heart center, a place of peace and integrity, while connecting to the heart of the earth, a mother and heirophant, whose love we all share. When you purchase Earth Church your money goes to the Aromatic Botanical Conservation.

Semi-circle Numerology Cards: A Review

"When I discovered numerology, it was like I was home! You can't argue with math! The more I studied Pythagoras, the more convinced I was the principles of numerology are true and fascinating."- Donetta Huffman

I have been studying Numerology since high school when I began to notice that number sequences were jumping out at me, at times seeming to chase me around. There is without doubt a mystical relationship with the universe and numbers and numerological patterns are a magical language of the divine.

When I worked in the local Metaphysical shop in my early twenties, the owner taught us some basic numerology, just as she was taught. We would gather at her house, drinking tea and talking numbers -- What fun! I had great time calculating my life path, soul, personality and destiny numbers. I would calculate the numbers of everyone I knew after learning how to do it.

Back in those days, there was nothing like Numerology Cards to help us with our studies. We did not carry them in the Metaphysical shop and if we did, I am certain they would have been a hit, especially during Numerology classes. I was super excited when saw an advertisement for the 1st Edition Numerology Card Deck. I had to give it a shuffle, regardless of a verdict. The one thing my metaphysical card collection has been missing is a deck of Numerology cards, although the study of numerological patterns predates the tarot. We are clearly living in the New Age, a time when What's Your Number? might not be able to be answered on a book of matches.

What's Your Number?

Numbers can help you discover your true purpose, giving you direct access to your soul, your destiny and your unique gifts and talents. All you need to calculate your numbers are your name and birthday, unlike astrology reports that require information that not everyone has on hand in the whim of a numerological moment. This gives you the ability to calculate numbers for everyone, as long as they allow you to. It is simple, and fun once you learn how to do it.

Rule of Thumb: It is rare that you are declined a free numerology reading. Everyone is interested in themselves and if they are not, they should be. When you get to know yourself, you can easily understand others. People who know themselves well also tend to be happier and more successful and are better capable to serve and take care of those around them.

As the great Pythagoras said, "No one is free who has not obtained the empire of himself." So next time someone offers to tell you a little more about yourself, to help you take better care of you, it is your divine right to pull up a chair and listen. Love yourself the way you want to be loved by others and you open a door that lets love flow continuously into your life.

Donetta Huffman

Donetta Huffman, is the author of Semi-Circle Numerology cards. A professional numerologist, Donetta has been counseling clients and giving readings for years. Her readings can be quite revealing, giving a deeper look into your true nature, your talents, opportunities, challenges and a clearer understanding of yourself and others. She has served the needs of her clients by providing in-depth advice on personal matters, career. love and business decisions. Donetta has given several lectures in Canada and the US. If you are interested in a personal reading from Donetta, please visit her at Semi-Circle Numerology.

The Deck

The cards themselves are based on numerology techniques of Pythagorus, an Ionian Greek philosopher, mathematician, numerologist and founder of the religious movement called Pythagoreanism. Born around 570 BC, Pythagorus believed that numbers were powerful, with personalities and wisdom. The name of the deck Semi-Circle is named after the Pythagorean
school, 'Semicircle'. These cards make learning, teaching and calculating numerology a piece of cake ... frosting included. The cards are super fun and are a great gift. This deck helps makes it really easy to give reading to everyone you know, without having to memorize anything. Just grab your deck of cards and your off ...

The complete set of Semi-Circle Numerology Cards is a deck of forty-nine cards, broken down into four sections, each for a specific type of numerology numbers. Each card details a number from one of the four
types of numerology numbers: personality, life path, destiny and soul. Also included with the deck is a card with the Pythgorean letters to numbers chart, four instructional cards and an instruction booklet. The
cost per deck is 24.99 + 6.95 shipping.

Pros

  * Only numerology deck on the market
  * Easy to use
  * Practice the art of numerology right away

Cons

  * The text is so interesting that I wanted more. (Smaller words, longer paragraphs)

The Nonviolent Communication Training Course, Marshall Rosenberg

This is a such great program for anyone who has problems getting people to get along, or getting along with others themselves.  A tool that can easily enrich the most meaningful, personal relationships in your life, Living Nonviolent Communication is the key to peace that you have been searching for.

I was blown-away by the level of compassion, life experience and wisdom author Marshall Rosenberg, Phd puts into this wonderful system.

Clinical psychologist, Dr. Rosenburg has created a one-of-a-kind system for getting in touch with the basic needs of ourselves and those around us.  When we recognize the needs (a common bond of humanity) of ourselves and those around us, strategies are discussed to meet the needs of everyone.

Rosenberg has expressed a human tendency that so many of us have realized though out the years of experiencing life ... When we make the choice to help someone with something that they need it feels good - It Feels Good To Help ... to contribute to the well-being of another ... to help them with a need.  The gift of giving comes from the heart to heart connection of need.  A true bond forms this way and everyone gets their needs met, therefore everyone is satisfied with the results.

Dr Rosenberg has been teaching this system of communication across the globe for over thirty years.  He lives what he teaches, the mark of a true healer and sage.

I absolutely adore this program.  It approaches communication in such a different way and it has truly changed my life.  For more information, please visit Sounds True.

Review - Kosmic Consciousness Ken Wilber

Kosmic Consciousness Ken Wilber

Hhhmmm ... how do I describe the indiscribable, difficult to define Kosmic Consciousness?   ( ... I pause for a state of even deeper reflection ... ) Well, there is one thing I can say for sure about this audio adventure ... and that is this - Whether you like Kosmic Consciousness or do not, you surely will learn a thing or two that will change the way you see things!!!

In this ten disc set (12 hours, 30 minutes), Sounds True publisher Tami Simon interviews one of the most influential and widely read American philosophers of our time, Ken Wilber.  A good friend to Wilber, Tami Simon has been asking him to do an audio with her on his integral work for years, finally to agree and Kosmic Consciousness was born.

The eclectic and prolific philosopher, Ken Wilber has sold many books across the globe, translated into more than twenty languages.  If you are a fan of his work you will love Kosmic Consciousness.

For myself, listening to Kosmic Consciousness took me on a ride through places I had never knew to ponder about before ... deep, detailed, unique and ... well, hhmmm ... sort of confusing.  I think this has to do with Ken Wilber being a newly introduced philosopher to myself, someone who I was not aware of previously.  His passion for life and story is evident, along with his need to remain humble, adding to his charm.  I must admit that to truly understand what he was saying while listening to Kosmic Consciousness was a little difficult for myself, but as mentioned I am not familiar with his work.  His brilliance is enough to blind ...

Once I devoted myself to truly grasping even a portion of what Mr. Wilber was conveying, I began to really listen.  As anything that you meditate upon, the truth in what he was saying certainly did indeed reveal itself ... an effort that was quite rewarding.  His work is a little like engulfing yourself into a really great novel, movie or perhaps even a really cool animated video game ... It is a fun adventure if you let it be OR an extremely boring lecture if you never break through the surface into the heart, color and vitality of his work.  It is definitely not for everyone, although Wilber is clearly a legend of his time.

Review: Mineral Hygienics Mineral Makeup Eye shadow and Lipstick

I am so excited to share some of the new make-up that I tried over the last month.  I love
Mineral Hygienics Mineral foundation, so naturally I could not wait to give their eyeshadow and lipstick a good wear.  Both are made with 100 percent minerals.

Eyeshadow ...

The eyeshadow is made from:
  • Titanium Dioxide
  • Zinc Oxide
  • Mica
  • May contain:Iron Oxides and Ultra Marines

When I applied the shadow I followed the directions, as guided via the Mineral Hygenics website.  (See below)  I used three different colors of mineral shadow.  They glided on quite nicely and looked fabulous.  One of my favorite things about Mineral Hygienics is the customer service - It rocks!  They are so nice and answer all my questions.  This is so helpful because make-up is an art and when you have someone on your side who wants to help you look your best, you will!  The price of the shadows are $13 each, a great price for mineral eyeshadow.  The eyeshadow brush from Mineral Hygienics ($14) is also really nice, making it easy to apply shadow.  The brush is extremely important to the finished look and this one works great and is priced quite low when compared to similar brushes.  P.S.-Don't forget to prime when applying shadow and don't worry, you can use foundation if that is all you have.

From the Mineral HygienicsWebsite ...

Application Tips: Smokey Eye Shadow

Take your time when working with minerals. You will soon find an application method that works great for you. You'll appreciate the evenness of the color, and concentration that the powder allows for light or heavy coverage.

EyesSmokey Eye Shadow

Shadow look is a very popular look for that special occasion or sexy "night on the town". Smokey Eyes can easily be achieved using two or three eye colors. Most people assume that a Smokey Eye Shadow color has to be done with dark charcoal pigments. This is not the case! You can use browns, deep purples, blues and greens to be a little more dramatic. You can top it off with a little shimmer. It all depends on what kind of look you want to achieve! Even though this look is fairly simple to do, there is a big difference between being done right and being done wrong. You should not have any lines to tell where one color starts and another ends, all the colors should compliment each other and blend well together. And remember that Practice Makes Perfect! Don't give up, it's a beautiful look and easy once you're mastered it!.

Step 1:

The first step if needed is to prime. Use an eye primer or very light foundation all over your eye so that you have a nice even tone.

Step 2:

Pick your colors! You'll want to find two or three shades of color. Lighter to Darker. As we discussed, earlier they do not have to be charcoals and blacks.

Step 3:

After you have your colors chosen; apply the lightest color or â€Å“highlight color” to the brow bone and upper part of your eye lid. If desired, this is the best place to add a little shimmer.

Step 4:

Now add in your medium or â€Å“mid-tone”. Starting at your lash work towards the crease. As you meet the highlighted area, slightly blend it in.

Step 5:

Use your darkest color along your lash line and blend in towards your crease.
Step 6:

Use the darkest color on your lower lash to achieve the shadowed effect.

Lipstick ...

The mineral pure lipstick is made from:
  •  Tocopheryl Acetate (Vit. E)
  • Wax, Lanolin Oil, Mineral Oil
  • Copernicia Cerifera(Carnauba) Wax
  • Ozokerite
  • Ceresin
  • BHT
  • Ricinus Communis(Castor) Seed Oil
  • Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride
  • Lanolin
  • Euphorbia Cerifera(Candelilla)
The mineral pure lips by Mineral Hygienics is a great price at $12.00, especially for a mineral lipstick.  I have seen high end, poisonous lipsticks for such high prices and it is ridiculous.  Beauty should not be dangerous girls ... and to the few boys out there too!  This lipstick is fabulous.  It works great, is moisturizing and comes in five different shades.  It would be great if there were a larger selection, but they do have the bases covered here - reds, pink, auburn ...

Review: Oro de Sonora Jojoba Oil

Lots of buzz these days about Jojoba (pronounced with an H sound in place of the J's) oil.  Actually there has been lots of buzz about this golden elixer for quite some time now.

This jack-of-all-oils has been known to mankind for ages and used for its moisturizing and emollient properties. Jojoba oil is actually a liquid wax derived from a jojoba seed. It was used by the early Native Americans for many things, including wound treatment and skin healing. This prized oil became very important to the cosmetic industry in the 1970s, when whaling was banned and sperm whale oil was no longer available.

Golden in color in its pure organic form, it offers a wide variety of benefits, everything from cosmetics to pesticides.  It has incredible versatility.

An excellent moisturizer suitable for daily use, Jojoba Oil nourishes and revitalizes skin, relieves sunburn and can be used on hands, nails and hair. Jojoba Oil is remarkably similar to the natural sebum secreted by our own skin.  Jojoba is the carrier of choice for the perfumery industry because it does not oxidize or become rancid.  Jojoba oil is hypo-allergenic, so it will not cause reactions on the skin and will not clog pores.  Jojoba has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it a useful treatment for acne, skin wounds and to soothe mild infections.  Jojoba oil is resistant to spoilage, heat damage and rancidity. because in addition to its hydrating, hypoallergenic and long-lasting properties, makes it a great base product for many cosmetics.

Here are a few uses ... I am sure that there are others too
  • Cuticle oil
  • Makeup remover
  • Scalp massage and cleanser
  • Hot oil hair treatment
  • Deep hot oil carrier oil
  • Natural remedy for dandruff
  • Shave oil
  • Hair growth
  • Mix with aloe vera to make a hair gel
  • Split end treatment
  • Before swimming, to protect from chemicals in water
  • Body moisturizer
  • Face moisturizer
  • Anti-aging
  • Oily skin treatment
  • Acne treatment
  • Lip oil
  • Tame flyaways
When shopping for Jojoba it is important to purchase an oil that is the highest quality possible.  I found a really great company that actually grows the Jojoba plants in bulk and extract about a few thousand gallons of  Pure Jojoba Emollient every year.  The name of the company is Oro de Sonora and they have been selling there golden emollient for over 27 years ...

Oro de Sonora Jojoba oil is exceptional.  Here is why ...

  • Jojoba seeds are Organically grown on our farms pesticide free

My Experience

This serum is lovely. It has such a sweet, pure scent that makes me feel like a rose myself. My husband loves it, describing it as having a natural, pure and real charm to it. It is not overpowering, being more on the subtle and delicate side, yet potent enough to make a good impression. It absorbs well into my skin and is especially wonderful when the weather is cold and dry.

This serum is meant to minimize discoloration from bruising and even skin tone. I found that it really does work to even my skin tone after I used it for about one month, although my bruises really did not appear
to heal any quicker using this serum. Duchess Marden did a great job incorporating the many benefits of rose with many other natural ingredients.

Review: Aveeno Active Naturals, Stress Relief Moisturizing Lotion

The Aveeno Active Naturals, calms and relaxes with the scent and properties of LAVENDER, CHAMOMILE & YLANG-YLANG.

This is my favorite lotion of all time.  My husband and I have been using it for such a long time now and it is his favorite too.

The scent is lovely ... light, relaxing and delicious!

It feels great on the skin and it lasts through out the day.  You do not need to reapply it often, the way you have to with other lotions.  Aveeno Active Naturals works great, especially in the dry and cold winter months.  I usually give this as a gift for pregnant moms.  They always love it!

The big bottle, 18 fluid ounces is reasonably priced under $10.00.

Album Review: 'Beneath The Veil' by Zingaia

Romance your lover this St. Valentine's Day with sacred music that echoes love and devotion.

Zingaia's Beneath The Veil is the first of three albums and was released back in August, 1997 by Sequoia Records, a well-respected name in New Age Music. Zingaia, the creation of husband and wife team, Katlyn and Michael Breene, was formed in the early 1990s. The Breenes' music is a blend of multicultural, new age, electronica-techno-trance-dance and exotic gypsy.

Beneath the Veil is dedicated to sacred lovers and to the eternal divine feminine, in her many forms and guises. To date, Zingaia has released three albums and has appeared on six compilations.

This album is captivating and addictive, getting into your blood, lighting a flame deep within your heart. Beneath the Veil takes you into a different realm, creating an atmosphere of mystery, mysticism and magic. It is an intoxicating blend of tribal percussion, keyboard, ethereal and haunting voices, repetitious hand drumming, giggles, chants and exotic melodies. Some songs contain a drone-like quality, adding to the already rich hypnotic textures.

The music paints a picture of fantasy lands afar. Visions of gypsies belly dancing, incense, smoke, ritual and lovers' union dance within the mind's gaze, pulling you deeper into the music. Some songs take you to the sea; others to the sand. You can hear elements from all over the world, combined to create a unique sound and style. Zingaia does not try to fit into any one genre of music, but paves a way for its own sound.

The lyrics are a mysterious blend of goddess invocation, poetic expression of the divine feminine and the alchemy of merging polarities creating a sacred union. The album begins with an invitation as "She Beckons," the first track, initiates you into the erotic, mysterious world of Zingaia. The journey moves forward and we are instructed to "Be the key to open something greater and hidden" in track two, "Invocation of the Goddess." The haunting, seductive vocals of Katlyn Breene and guest vocalist, Veronic Fabre, are alluring and enchanting; exciting yet relaxing.

Track three, "Sirens of the Moonlit Tide," my favorite track on the album, awakens your senses, if you are not up and dancing already. Moving forward, the sixth track, "Beneath The Veil," reveals the alluded secret. The album then continues on with one more track, the seventh and final piece of the composition.

The album, as a whole, has a feel of both excitement and relaxation, keeping you engaged, yet distant, creating a heightened alertness and a calm focus at the same time. This is another example of the unification or polar opposites, as earth and sky and male and female energies unite. The album is uplifting, meditative and easy to dance to. People of many different tastes can easily find an appreciation of this work. The aesthetics of the album are also impressive, the artist being the talented Katlyn Breene. Although the music speaks for itself, the art is a nice compliment to Zingaia's enchanting world.
