Review: Little Ruth Reddingford and the Wolf

Little Ruth Reddingford and the Wolf  is influenced by the old tale of Little Red Riding Hood, yet different enough to be a completely original and unique tale of its own.  In this story the big bad wolf of the original story is replaced by two bullies (Spike and Butch) who harass Red while traveling through the woods to get to her Native American grandmothers' house.  The wolf in this tale is heroic ... a spirit, shadow guardian who is follows Red to protect her and keep her safe.

Grandma, a Hopi medicine woman is one of my favorite characters of all time in a children's book.  I would love to see more books with Ruth and her grandmother.  I think that this would make a lovely series.

I love this book.  It is a great introduction to Native American culture, as well as being rich with detail, meaning and spirituality.
